Luckily, There Are No Shortcuts

The past 6 months have been incredibly busy for me in ways I had never anticipated. One of the unfortunate casualties of this busy period was the blog. I got out of the habit of writing and posting. Big mistake. I have realized how much I need writing in order to keep myself focused on what is important. This blog definitely helps me a lot more than anyone else. So thank you for those that have continued checking in and encouraging me to get back to what I love.

One of the events contributing to this busy season was that I purchased a 2nd dental practice last fall. Most of you know I am a dentist and I’ve always had the dream of owning multiple dental practices where I could organize teams of highly motivated and well-trained individuals and can change people’s perception of a dental office.…

The Revolution of Man

This past weekend the United States of America celebrated the 238th anniversary of its independence from England. I know I have readers from all over the world and I don’t want this to become some kind of geopolitical history debate. But the holiday had me thinking a lot about the men and women who fought in the revolutionary war. They were outnumbered, poorly armed, less experienced, and generally at a major disadvantage. Some of the colonists thought it was easier to just keep things the way they were. But for those who fought, the idea of keeping things the same was unacceptable. They had caught the idea of freedom and they were going to fight until they had achieved it.American Revolution

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that those revolutionaries weren’t so different than you or I.…

The Success Auction: How Much Would You Pay?

auction 3

“Bidding will start at $100 for this next item. Do I hear $100?”

A number of hands rose up and the auction was under way. The bidding started off in a frenzy as everybody looked to get the object for a low price.

“$150, thank you sir. $200 to the lady in the yellow hat. $250? Yes, thank you young man.”

The price climbed steadily higher and higher. As the price rose it started to eliminate the people who decided they didn’t want to pay that much to win.

Within minutes the auctioneer found that he had to work much harder to get bidders.

“The bid is at $1100, do I hear $1100? It is a bargain at this price ladies and gentlemen. Thank you madam!”

“$1200 then.…

You Were Born for This!

Born for This

Why are you here? Have you ever stopped to wonder?

Some would have you believe that you are merely here because of a reaction between two complex molecules. They would have you believe that there is no purpose to your life other than to procreate and advance the species. You are not special. You are nothing more than a random mixture of DNA. Born DNA

They will tell you that the world is made up of only greed, selfishness, and misery. They will tell you it is okay to become cynical, negative, and depressed because that’s how life is. They will be angry with envy when you succeed. They will be content and self-congratulating when you are down. They will never stop criticizing everything else because “life’s not fair.”

They will tell you that your biggest dreams are foolish and that your deep emotions are over-exaggerated.…

It’s the 4th Quarter!

It’s the 4th Quarter!

4th quarter scoreboardThis is it! December is here and it is the end of the 4th quarter for 2012. Remember those goals you set back in January? Seems like a long time ago doesn’t it?

Well have no fear, there is still time to do great things! Did you know that on average 40% of the points scored in an NFL game come in the 4th quarter? That doesn’t make sense does it? If every player is a professional and giving a 100% effort from the start to the finish of a game, the breakdown should be 25% of the points in each of the four quarters.

But something happens in those final minutes of the game. The players and coaches have something in reserve; an extra effort.…

Get Those Hands Dirty!

Get Those Hands Dirty!

When I first started consulting businesses and providing life-coaching for individuals, I felt that the greatest thing most people lacked was a vision. A real, solid vision of what they wanted for their business or for their life. Most people have dreams floating around in their head of how nice it would be to do this or have that. But very, very few have taken the time to sit down and really think through their ideal life and then write it down. I always felt that if a business or individual could just do that, they would be on their way to a more successful life.

I still believe that to be the case but I have come to realize that there is a second factor that actually seems to trip up a lot of people.…

It Couldn’t Be Done…But He Did It

Any time I start something new and come up against an obstacle, I remember this poem by Edgar Guest and it gives me renewed energy to go out and get it done. There are plenty of people in the world who will criticize you when you go after your life goals. It is not that they want you to fail but they don’t want you to succeed. Why? Because when you succeed, they feel like it automatically means that they are a failure because they aren’t accomplishing their goals. So remember, when someone says that it can’t be done, they are really saying that they do not feel like putting in the effort to accomplish it. Your job is to prove them wrong! Enjoy the poem!…
