The Two Most Important Things You Can Control

attitude and effort

What can we really control in life?

Individually, we can’t control the economy, the weather, the performance of our favorite sports team, or the actions of other people. They happen whether we like it or not.

Everything that we can control comes from within. There are two major factors we can control that will lead to greater success and achievement.
We decide how to utilize these factors every single day.

#1. Attitude

Our attitude is purely our own choice. No matter what people say or do to us, we have the decision of how we will react. Some people choose to just have a bad attitude about almost everything. You buy them a cake and they complain about the frosting. They get a raise and promotion and they complain about the increase in responsibility.Read the rest!

Carving the Canyon: 4 Strategies for Improving Your Habits

grand-canyon-colorado-river

A few weeks ago I got to be a chaperone for my son’s 4th grade trip to the Grand Canyon. I’ll say this, controlling a group of 10 year-old boys as they hike along the side of a few 1000 ft. cliffs added it’s fair share of grey hairs to my head. But we all survived and had a great time.

On the long bus ride home I had time to reflect on what we had seen during the day and I began see a correlation between the Grand Canyon and our personal habits. I know that sounds strange but that’s just the way my brain works. At least it makes for interesting blogging.

Anyway, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon flows the mighty Colorado River.… Read the rest!

You Were Born for This!

Born for This

Why are you here? Have you ever stopped to wonder?

Some would have you believe that you are merely here because of a reaction between two complex molecules. They would have you believe that there is no purpose to your life other than to procreate and advance the species. You are not special. You are nothing more than a random mixture of DNA. Born DNA

They will tell you that the world is made up of only greed, selfishness, and misery. They will tell you it is okay to become cynical, negative, and depressed because that’s how life is. They will be angry with envy when you succeed. They will be content and self-congratulating when you are down. They will never stop criticizing everything else because “life’s not fair.”

They will tell you that your biggest dreams are foolish and that your deep emotions are over-exaggerated.… Read the rest!

Do it Scared!

Picture A story shared by one of my mentors, Rory Vaden. Enjoy!

I once heard a true story of a woman who was trapped in a burning building on the 80th floor. She had an intensive fear of heights and also an intense fear of closed in spaces. So when the fire alarm went off she absolutely refused to follow her colleagues into the stairwell to evacuate to safety.

She could not handle the thought of going down the stairs being able to look down in the middle all the way to the bottom. And the thought of being trapped inside the enclosed stairwell was just too much to endure and so instead she made a conscious choice to hide under her desk and wait to die.… Read the rest!

Increase Your Willpower!

Picture

Editor’s note: This is a great post I found from Ian Newby-Clark of My Bad Habits.

“Control yourself!” We all say it, mostly to ourselves. We say it when we ‘indulge’ in behaviors that cause short-term gain for long-term pain…and guilt. I cite many of the usual suspects: eating the wrong things, being lazy, staying up too late, indulging in destructive behaviors. There are others, of course. Why do we do such things? After all, aren’t we entirely in control of ourselves all of the time?

Nope.

Research tells us that willpower is a limited resource. Each of us only has so much of it. The studies demonstrating this are rather ingenious. I will share one of my favorites with you, though there are many more.
