Back in college I took a geology class because I was looking for an easy way to fulfill a science requirement. The class was interesting and not particularly difficult. After the first few weeks I was ranked #2 in the class and was certainly overly proud of myself.

One morning when we arrived at the classroom the door was locked. There was a sign on the door that said we would be assigned to specific stations that day based on our class rank. Below that was a list of the students, with a number by their name indicating which station they would be at for the day.

gemstones microscopeBefore long, the teacher opened the door and announced that we would be studying gemology that day. He let us in to find our assigned seats. As we settled in, I noticed that half of the stations had microscopes and other instruments for closely examining small stones. The other stations had a pair of tweezers and a magnifying glass.

Since my station had the microscope, I assumed that all of the kids on my side of the classroom were the top of the class and because we had worked so hard, we were given the extra benefit of superior tools.

Once we were all settled, the professor told us that we would be having a competition that day. He was going to give each group some precious stones to evaluate. He wrote the average price of each type of stone on the chalkboard. Our job was to evaluate the size, weight, cut and clarity of each stone and then make an educated guess as to the value it held. The team that came closest would be given extra credit points on the upcoming exam.

This almost seemed too easy! There was no way that the other team would be able to pick up on the imperfections in the stones with only a magnifying glass. They’d just have to guess by looking at how “pretty” it was or if it just “looked expensive.”

Gemstones 2The challenge began and we started sifting through the small plate of gems. There were rubies, emeralds, amethyst, sapphires, and even a diamond.

I got even more excited about our chances at victory when I started to look through the microscope. With the enormous magnification I was able to see all of the discrepancies in the stone that would decrease the value. Every stone had them to some extent. There was no way the other team would see them. We had this in the bag.

We confidently submitted our estimated prices for each of the stones.

As to be expected, the “B team” had grossly overvalued their gems. Their prices for each stone were much higher than ours. It wasn’t their fault, they just couldn’t see the imperfections.

We waited with a smirk on our faces as the teacher began to unveil the actual price of each gem.

To our shock and horror, the gems were worth a lot more than we had estimated. In fact, we were generally lower by about 50% in every instance. Not only that, across the board the other team was within 3% of the actual cost. We had not only lost, we had been humiliated.

So what happened?

The professor paused for a moment as the chatter and cheering died down, then he explained to us where we had gone wrong.

“The value of a gem is in the appearance to the eye.” he said. “The way it sparkles, the way it shines. It is based more on how you feel when you see it. It is true that a gem with less imperfections will tend to sparkle better but that is not always the case. Some of the most brilliant diamonds in the world look crystal clear from one side but if you take a microscope and look from another angle, you will always find an imperfection. A gem’s value is more in the way it sparkles and not so much in it’s imperfections.

I was stunned and a little angry. He had set us up! He played upon our pride to make us think we were better equipped and smarter than the other students. He led us right into his trap! I was really bothered for a couple of hours until I realized the point he was teaching. He was teaching me something important about life, not just about gems.

I was reminded that day that we all have imperfections. Every one of us. That is what makes us unique. But often times we start to look too close at our imperfections or the imperfections of others. We whip out our microscopes and start analyzing every little blemish as though it were enormous. The more we focus on the imperfections, the less we see of the person’s “sparkle”. In the end, it is the way that we “sparkle” and “shine” that determines our value, not the size or amount of our imperfections.

  1. Let’s avoid looking at people with a microscope to find their faults, blemishes or habits that we don’t agree with. When we do, we vastly undervalue them.

  4. A person’s value is in the way that they shine in life! It is in the way they bring happiness to others, in spite of their own faults and imperfections.

 

It is my hope that we can all shine brightly and never undervalue ourselves or someone else.

The other night I was having trouble sleeping and found myself flipping through channels on the television. I stopped on ESPN where they were showing a re-run of some poker tournament. As I watched, I realized a couple of important things about poker that really amazed me.

(Before I go any farther, let me just tell you that I am not a great poker player. I know the basics of which hands are good because I played Yahtzee as a kid but beyond that, I’m clueless.)

What amazed me as I watched the tournament was how often the person with the best hand didn’t end up winning the round. In fact, there were a couple of times that the person with almost the worst hand ended up collecting the money in the pool. I find that fascinating. Having great cards increases the chances of someone winning the hand but really doesn’t guarantee them a victory. Having a less than desirable hand doesn’t mean you automatically lose. There are other factors that go into winning.

You have to play the hand you’re dealt.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to trade cards with anyone else or pay extra to upgrade your hand. The cards you get are the cards you play. Each of us is dealt a hand when we come into the world. Some will have every advantage: happy family life, good genetics, a safe home, etc. They have been dealt a great hand. Others may be born into poverty, a broken family, child abuse, etc. They have been dealt a little tougher hand. poker nervous

The important point to remember is that you cannot change the hand you’re dealt. You don’t decide what circumstances you are born into and it does no good to complain about them or expect that they will determine your success. Many people think that being born into money or prestige will guarantee their happiness. Nothing could be farther form the truth. Others will use their hard circumstances as a crutch for why they don’t succeed. They take a look at the hand they were dealt and fold immediately.

The hand you were dealt cannot be changed, but the way you play it can.

Winning has less to do with your hand, and more to do with how you play it.

Like I said earlier, it is not the person with the best hand that always wins. I suppose that is one of the exciting aspects of poker. A great poker player can “defy” the hand he is dealt and, if he acts confidently, can get the other players to fold.

Some of the most successful people I have ever met were people who had been dealt some bad cards in their lifetime. Real bad cards. Cards that would have made me probably fold and give up. But they were able to take those cards and use them to put together a victory. They didn’t give up when others thought their hand was unwinable. They found ways to use those cards for their benefit and growth. They learned from them and became proud of their hand. They owned it and ended up as winners.

I know that you have trials and hardships. I know that you’ve been dealt some tough cards from time to time. Since you can’t change those cards, how are you going to play them? Are you going to fold or proceed in a timid manner? Are you going to accept them and still move forward towards your goals? Will you blame your cards for your misfortune for most of your life?

It is up to you.

Every hand, no matter how bad, has the potential to be a winning hand.

Stop Drop and Roll

Have you ever let an irritating person or event ruin your whole day?

Do you hold onto bitter feelings or grudges that affect you for days or weeks at a time?

Today I wanted to share 3 steps for getting over the bitter feelings, annoyances, irritations and other obstacles keeping you from having a happy and peaceful day.

This thought was shared with me by one of my dental assistants a few months ago and I’ve wanted to write about it ever since. As best I can tell, it comes from a book called Fuel by Jeremy Chin. I haven’t read the book so I hope I don’t butcher his meaning and intent.

You will recognize the 3 steps from your childhood as the method for putting out a fire on your body: Stop. Drop. Roll.

Before getting into each of those, let’s talk about “fire”. Obviously we are using fire as a metaphor for that feeling of being angry, worked up, annoyed, and frustrated. Have you ever been so angry it felt like you were on fire? I know I have.Stop Drop Roll yosemite_sam

When we get into that emotional state, we become more irrational and are likely to do or say things we would never do with a calm head. Sometimes it causes us to treat other people poorly even though they were never the cause of our initial irritation. Spending too much time “on fire” has destroyed many marriages, friendships, and business relationships. It is completely detrimental to our long-term happiness and success.

So how do we put out the fire?

#1 – Stop reacting to the stupid stuff

If you looked hard for them, you could find a hundred little reasons to get upset. Some people’s day is ruined if someone guts them off on the freeway. Or if their babysitter is 5 minutes late. Every time the small, inconsequential events occur, you get to make a choice about how you will let it affect you. Do you look at it as though everyone is trying to intentionally disrupt your day? Or do you just figure it was a mistake or oversight and then keep moving? If you want to feel happier and more content during the day, you must start by stopping.

#2 – Drop your irritation and anger

If you find that you have become angry at some one or some thing, remember to stop and take a deep breath and then let it go. Even if you are totally justified in feeling offended or upset, you have to let it go. The other person isn’t thinking twice about it so why should you let it ruin your day? Just let it go.

#3 – Roll on with your life

Now that you have stopped reacting to the stupid stuff and dropped the irritation and anger, you ca  now just roll forward. Get on with your life! What happened, happened. You can’t go back to change it and it does no good to worry about it. Life is all about moving forward so don’t let a little speed bump bring you to a complete stop.

Today we finish our series on Isaac Newton’s 3 Laws of Success. In case you missed them, you can check out the other two here:

Newton’s 1st Law of Success: Perpetual Motion, Newton’s 2nd Law of Success: Acceleration

Today we will talk about Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion and how it applies to our journey towards happiness and success.

Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion basically states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Some examples of this would be someone shooting a rifle where the force to propel the bullet forward also produces a force in the opposite direction that kicks back against the shoulder of the shooter. Newtons 3rd 1If two people wearing roller skates put their hands together and push off, they will both shoot off with equal force but in opposite directions. When you sit down in a chair you are putting a force downward on the chair. If the chair is not strong enough to provide an equal force pushing back up, the chair collapses and you fall to the ground.

This law is all about symmetry and balance.

If something moves forward, something moves back.

So how can we apply it to our lives?

This law could probably be applied in many different ways but I want to focus on one specific comparison, and it has to do with our journey for self-improvement.

On one side of the scale is a plate for all of the positive aspects we have developed in our lives. All of our positive thoughts, actions, and habits.

On the other side is the plate for all of the negative aspects we have allowed into our life. The negative thoughts, criticism, self-doubt, destructive habits, bad friends, etc.

Now, let’s pretend that every one of us has 100 coins divided into the two piles. Some may have a majority on the positive side, some may have a majority on the negative side. Everybody is different in the way their coins are divided.

Our goal is to get as many coins onto the positive side as possible. We do it through goal setting, hard work, developing positive habits, self-discipline, and training our brain to think positively.

This is where Newton’s 3rd Law works in our favor.

Every time we succeed in moving a coin to the positive side (action), one coin is removed from the negative side (equal and opposite reaction).

The more positive habits you develop, the more you will see your negative habits disappearing. The more you go out to serve other people, the less selfish you will be. The more you focus on positive thoughts, the less time you will have to be self-critical. The more you set daily goals to work towards, the less you will procrastinate or waste time.

When you make positive progress in your life, you are also leaving behind negative hindrances.

Unfortunately, Newton can work against us!

The flip side to the above paragraph is that opposite is also true. If we increase our negative or self-destructive habits (action), we decrease the number of positive, success habits we perform (equal and opposite reaction).

Newton frustrated-manWe all have those bad habits that just frustrate us from time to time. It could be procrastination, laziness, unhealthy substance addictions, self-criticism, gossiping, over-eating, or anything else that we feel holds us back. The more of them that we hold onto to, the less coins we will have available to move over to the positive side of the scale.

For example, if the action is smoking 18 packs of cigarettes a day, the equal and opposite reaction would be a decrease in lung performance and overall health. If the action was chronic procrastination, the equal and opposite reaction would be decrease in quality of work and ultimately success or earning potential.

In case you were wondering, no we cannot create more coins. The system is closed and it is balanced. The coins cannot be created or destroyed, only allocated where we choose to put them. One side of the scale goes up, the other side goes down. Action, reaction.

Ideas for putting Newton’s 3rd Law to work for you

#1 – Take an inventory of your habits, behaviors, thoughts, etc.; both good and bad. Make a list of your “coins” on both sides of the scale.

#2 – Find a negative action that would be the easiest to remove or stop. Work on that one first. As soon as you have changed it, you will notice an increased benefit in the positive side of life.

#3 – Look for a new positive habit to start. Maybe setting effective daily goals, or jogging, or complimenting people. Start adding that to your life every day and soon you will find that you don’t have time for as much negative stuff.

Conclusion

Newton’s Law of Action and Reaction gives us an incredible insight into the balance and battle between the positive and negative in our life. The takeaway lesson from this law is that we should always look for ways to increase our good actions and habits. As you add more and more positive aspects to your life, the negatives will start to decrease without you even focusing on them. That is the magic of this natural law. If you focus on increasing the positives, you are forcing a decrease in the negatives.

Last week we started our series, “Newton’s Laws of Success”, with a post about Perpetual Motion which taught us about actively directing our life towards success and happiness instead of allowing a bad day to turn into a bad week.

Today we will look at Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion and see if we can find a way to apply it.

Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion states that the amount of Acceleration (a) on an object is determined by the Mass (m) of the object and the Force (F) placed on it. In other words, if I want to push an object up a hill, the speed in which I can get the to the top depends on how much muscle I put into it and how Newton's 2ndheavy the object is. So if I push with the same force, I would be able to get a beach ball to the top of the hill faster than I could get a car to the top of the hill. Sounds logical, right?

There is a great application here to our daily endeavors both big and small. This law describes how quickly we will be able to succeed or accomplish our big goals. This law also proves that acceleration towards our long-term goals is completely dependent on us!

Let me explain.

One of my goals for today is relatively easy, it is cleaning my desk (easy = low mass). I can get it done quickly (high acceleration) with a small amount of energy or thought (low force).

If one of my life goals were to run a marathon (hard = high mass), the speed at which I could accomplish the goal (acceleration) would be completely dependent on the amount of time I was willing to put into training, eating right, and planning (force).

We see this natural law to be true every day in our efforts at work, school, or at home. If we put in the same effort every day, the big tasks (high mass) just take longer than the small tasks (low mass).

So when you have a big goal that will require significant effort to accomplish, the amount of effort we are willing to give on a daily basis will directly determine how soon we accomplish that goal.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Mass = Size of your goal
  • Force = Amount of effort and focus you put into it
  • Acceleration = How quickly you accomplish it

The final formula looks like this: Acceleration = Force / Mass

The speed with which you move toward your goal depends on how much energy you put in, divided by the size of the goal. If the goal is huge, it will take more force on your part to get it done in the amount of time you’ve set for it.

Here’s the problem!

Most people in the world have big dreams in their head and they want to accomplish them quickly but they aren’t willing to apply the amount of force necessary to accomplish it.

Because of Newton’s 2nd Law, it will be impossible for them to do it! There is no great accomplishment without an equally great effort. If the effort, persistence, work, and dedication aren’t there…the dream goes nowhere.

We have a choice!

The natural laws do not bend or change for us. So we can either accept them and use them to our benefit, or we can kick against them and beat our heads trying to come up with a way around them.

Here is the process I take people through when I first start coaching them on their life-planning:

#1 – Define your vision. Decide what you want from life or what would bring you the greatest happiness. What is the thing that you love so much that you would do it for free? What activity makes you the happiest? Decide in your mind what would be the perfect life for you.

#2 – Find out where you are. Looking at your vision for your ideal life, decide where you are in relation to that goal. Are you miles away in some areas but close in others? Will some aspects take many years to accomplish? What would be needed to get from here to there?Newton2nd 2

#3 – Decide how much force you want to apply. Are you at a point in your life where you a ready to start setting meaningful goals towards your vision? Are you willing to change your daily habits and routine in order to get what you want? Are you willing to let go of some things that could be holding you back? How much time can you make for yourself every day to accomplish your goals.

We all  fall into one of these categories:
  • Those who put a lot of force into small tasks and get them done quickly but don’t really progress towards their big goals.
  • Those who put a little bit of force into small tasks and never really get anything done.
  • Those who put a little force into their big dreams but not enough to ever get closer to them.
  • Those who put a lot of force into big dreams. This is where you want to be, These are the people who create their own destiny.

At some point we probably are a mixture of all of these types of people. But the more time we can spend in that group of people with “high mass” goals applying “high force” to those goals, the sooner we will be able to create the successful life we have envisioned.

Newton's Law of Success

We all know about Sir Isaac Newton.

Gravity, the apple, inventor of calculus.

Some of his most famous work was his Three Laws of Motion.

This post is the first in a series of three, looking at how Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion are also really Laws of Success. They each apply to us every day and our understanding of them will lead us to greater happiness, fulfillment and achievement.

Let’s get started.

Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force.

blue_glass_marble___stock_by_mrdragonx-d4u249lSo if we rolled a marble on a glass floor, it would keep going and going but eventually stop because of gravity and the friction of the glass table. When an asteroid flies through outer space, it will keep moving straight ahead practically forever until it runs into something or its course is changed by the gravity of some planet.

But how does that apply to you?

This idea was introduced to me by Steven J. Anderson, Behavioral Physicist and all around great guy.

Have you ever had one of those days where things started off bad and then seemed to get worse and worse as the day moved on? Then you go to bed worrying about what else could happen tomorrow and dream about more bad stuff. Sure enough you wake up the next day in a bad mood and before you know it you have put together a bad week.

This is an example of an object in motion in a constant direction. Something happened to you in the morning that was equivalent to you pushing that marble on the glass floor. So your day proceeds in that bad direction. It will continue in that bad direction unless something acts upon it to change its direction or stop it. Some outside force has to come into play.

You are that force!

A bad experience doesn’t have to become a bad day. A bad day doesn’t have to become another bad day or a bad week. If you aren’t happy with the way your life is going, you have to act upon it to change its course or else it will just keep going the way it has been.

Here are some things you can do to change or improve the direction of your life:

#1 – Talk to yourself!

The things we say to ourselves on the inside have a big effect on how we feel about our day. If you have had a crummy day, don’t lay in bed and think about all of the bad things that happened. That just accelerated the marble in the wrong direction. Instead, why not read something motivational or inspiring? (Of course I think Successify.net is a great source!). Or, you can try neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). NLP is a a process where you basically tell yourself, out loud or on the inside, positive phrases about who you want to be or how you want to live.stuart_smalley

For example, some of my favorites are, “I can do hard things!”, “My mistakes make me stronger!”, “Don’t forget to be awesome!”, “I can do anything I set my mind to!”, “Tomorrow will be the best day of my life!” Sounds a lot like the old Stuart Smalley skit from Saturday Night Live.

When you say these things to yourself, your brain starts to release the hormones that make us feel happy and motivated. It literally “gets the juices flowing.” When you are able to go to sleep with those types of thoughts in your head, you will sleep better and wake up more energized for the next day. You will have pushed your marble in the right direction.

#2 – Set goals for yourself.

Another great way to change poor perpetual motion is through goal-setting. When you set goals for yourself you are basically saying, “Here is where my life is going but I want it to be a little better. So I’m going to make a plan to change to this better direction.” You are building up the energy that will then be exerted on your “marble”. Without goals, life tends to flow along wherever the world takes it, like a stream running down a hill. It will follow the past of least resistance, which usually isn’t the path to success.

Choose some things you would like to accomplish in at least three areas of your life: career, family, health, spirituality, relationships, etc. Then write down at least one aspect that you would like to improve on or accomplish in each area. Make sure your goal isn’t abstract, like “I want to be more friendly.” or “I want to eat healthier.” True goals have to be specific and measurable. A good example would be, “I am going to give a compliment to 5 people every day.” or “I am going to lose 5 pounds before June by not snacking on candy every day and exercising 30 minutes a day.”

Once they are written down, are specific, and have a deadline, you need to post them somewhere where you will see them every day. I prefer the bathroom mirror or on the monitor of my computer at work.

If you do this, you will notice within a few days that the direction of your life has been changed for the better.

#3 – Change your routine

We’ve all heard the term “stuck in a rut.” It doesn’t have a very positive sound to it, does it? Our lives are, for the most part, a series of patterns or routines. We repeat them every day. Some of them, like going to work, cannot be changed. So what do we do when negativity sneaks into our daily routine? I find that some simple changes to the pattern can have a ripple effect that improves the whole day. I cannot easily change the fact I go to work every day but I can choose what I listen to on the way there. I can choose what route I take. I can choose to leave early enough to have a relaxing drive instead of leaving late and frantically trying to get there on time.

Small variations in the overall pattern of our day allow us to find new experiences and get us out of the “rut”. Often times we are stuck in a rut by our own choosing. If the pattern of our day is not working out for us, change the pattern! Mixing it up a little will affect your overall mood and help you go in the right direction.

As Newton taught us, our life will head in the direction we set for it. If we aren’t careful, other factors will enter and try to pull it down or to a stop. We need to apply constant pressure in the right direction or alter the course if we see it veering away from our intended goal. Apply Newton’s 1st Law of Motion, or as I call it, “Newton’s 1st Law of Success” and you will have a lot more successful days.

March was a crazy month for Successify! We jumped from 400 visitors a day to about 40,000! So many people signed up that my e-mail and contact manager completely crashed. What does that mean? At first I was a little annoyed that I had to do it but soon I realized what a blessing it was. I also was the recipient of a lot of good words of wisdom as some of you added meaningful comments when you subscribed. Today I finished and entered subscriber #12,224.

As I look back on this experience, here is what I learned about our readers and subscribers:

You are writers, doctors, lawyers, actors, real estate agents, models, homemakers, school administrators, college students, grandparents, war veterans, business owners, social workers, and retirees.

International Federation of Medical Students' ...

You come from the United States, Canada, India, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and 96 other countries.

Most important of all, you are wise, innovative, caring, helpful, insightful, fighters, dreamers, and visionaries.

When I set out on this endeavor back in August I never imagined that it would help me find so many people around the world who are of like mind. Those of us who work every day to make ourselves and the world around us a little better. To help “successify” this life.

Born for This

Why are you here? Have you ever stopped to wonder?

Some would have you believe that you are merely here because of a reaction between two complex molecules. They would have you believe that there is no purpose to your life other than to procreate and advance the species. You are not special. You are nothing more than a random mixture of DNA. Born DNA

They will tell you that the world is made up of only greed, selfishness, and misery. They will tell you it is okay to become cynical, negative, and depressed because that’s how life is. They will be angry with envy when you succeed. They will be content and self-congratulating when you are down. They will never stop criticizing everything else because “life’s not fair.”

They will tell you that your biggest dreams are foolish and that your deep emotions are over-exaggerated. They will keep an eye on you and when you start to peak your head up above the crowd, they will try to pull you back down. If you step out of their line, or march to a different beat, they will be ready to “fix” you.

They will remind you of your mistakes. They will discount your joys. They will tell you that you are not unique; that you are just like everyone else. They will show you pictures of what you should look like or how you should act. They’ll say you need to “go with the flow.” They will tell you all of this whether you want to hear it or not.

They are wrong.

You were born for this roller-coaster called life. You were specifically designed and engineered to tackle whatever obstacles come before you and to come through triumphant.

You were born with a unique ability to think differently than everybody else. Your thoughts and feelings have never been experienced before by anybody in the way that you put them together. There is nothing about you that is “just like everyone else.”

This experience we call life can be difficult at times. One day you are on top of the world and the next day you feel like the weight of the world is going to bury you. Some days life will lift you up and others it will beat you down. The great secret is that you get to decide what happens after each up and each down.You can learn from both if you choose to.

You won’t be able to control 99% of what happens around you in the world but you will be able to control 100% of what happens within you. Your thoughts and emotions belong to you and nobody else.Born for Victory

You were born with an ability unique to the human race. It is the power of choice. Conscious decisions. That ability gives you the opportunity to choose both the shoes you wear and the car you drive. More importantly, it gives you the ability to choose your attitude. In every uncontrollable circumstance, you get to choose to be positive or negative. To sit quietly or to stand up and shout. To shrink or to fight.

So when the world is crashing down around you, when it feels like you are alone or isolated, when you are continually criticized for just trying your best, remember that you were born for this! You have everything you need within you to overcome. Decide what you want out of life. Decide what it will take to get it. Decide how hard you are willing to work for it. Then go and make it happen. The more they criticize you, the more certain you can be that you are on the right track.

Jesse Owens (1913-1980) was an African-American track and field athlete who became a sports legend during the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party had been in power for three years and the Berlin games was the perfect way to showcase the might and efficiency of Germany’s new political regime. Hitler believed that the Aryan master race (white, blonde hair, blue eyes) was superior to all other races and was looking forward to this being proved at the Berlin games. But Jesse Owens burst his bubble by winning four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, long-jump and 4x100m relay.

Inevitable Battle

JFK moonThis weekend I was reading John F. Kennedy’s speech at Rice University in 1962. You may know it as the speech in which he declared that we would put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

This speech is fascinating because at the time it was given, the United States hadn’t even put a man into space yet. The U.S. was repeatedly getting embarrassed by Russia, whose space program was breaking new ground over and over again. In the space race, the U.S. was falling way behind.

When Kennedy took the stage that day he knew he needed to do something to inspire the American people; to wake the ingenuity and creativity of a country. He knew it would take the strength and support of an entire nation to achieve such a lofty goal.

Here are some of my favorite excerpts from his speech: (you can watch, listen, or read the speech HERE)

“…we meet in an hour of change and challenge, in a decade of hope and fear, in an age of both knowledge and ignorance. The greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds.”

“So it is not surprising that some would have us stay where we are a little longer to rest, to wait. But this city of Houston, this State of Texas, this country of the United States was not built by those who waited and rested and wished to look behind them. This country was conquered by those who moved forward–and so will space.”

“The exploration of space will go ahead, whether we join in it or not, and it is one of the great adventures of all time, and no nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in the race for space.”

“For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding.”

“But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic?”

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

“To be sure, we are behind, and will be behind for some time in manned flight. But we do not intend to stay behind, and in this decade, we shall make up and move ahead.”

“To do all this, and do it right, and do it first before this decade is out–then we must be bold…But it will be done. And it will be done before the end of this decade.”

The way he presented this vision to the country teaches us three valuable lessons about how we should set our personal goals.

#1 – He set a goal big enough to inspire us.

Short-terms goals are important to keep us moving forward. They can be achieved with just a little more focus and attention. But our overall vision for our life needs to be big and inspiring. We should feel joy and excitement every time we get one small step closer to achieving that vision. Kennedy did not just say, “Let’s catch up with the Russians.” He didn’t say, “Let’s get a man to orbit the moon and return.” He took it 10 steps further by saying we would put a man on the moon, get him back on the ship, blast off back into space, then return to earth. The technology to do most of these things did not even exist or hadn’t even been imagined. But once the vision was in place, things started to happen.

#2 – He identified the problems or obstacles

Kennedy didn’t just flippantly throw out a dream about going to the moon. He basically said, “Look, we are way behind. We’ve had some very public failures. It will take everything we’ve can muster to pull it off. But it is worth doing. If we want to be a world leader, we need to be leading in the space race.” As we look at our vision for life or our long-term goals, we need to identify where we are currently and what are the obstacles we will need to overcome in order to obtain our goal.

#3 – He set a deadline

Every effective goal has a deadline. Kennedy was not satisfied with merely saying, “We will go to the moon.” He said, “We will put a man on the moon and return him home before the end of the decade.” When did it happen? July 20th. 1969. When writing your goals, put a deadline on them. This adds a level of urgency in our brain which will push us that little bit harder. It transforms our goal from an abstract wish to a concrete objective.

#4 – He got to work

In the parts of the speech that I left out, Kennedy talked about how he had increased funding to the space program, tripling the amount spent the previous year. He called upon NASA to increase its work load. He told the nation that every working American would essentially giving 50 cents a week to space exploration. He was telling the country, “Here is the vision, this is the plan, this is when it will be accomplished, we’re all in this together so let’s get to work.”

Conclusion

We all have a bunch of goals, dreams, and desires floating around in our head. They give us hope for our future. They give us something to look forward to. Hopefully they inspire us. The trick is turning them from dreams into action. To do it, we need to follow the points that President Kennedy taught us:

#1 – Find a dream that inspires you

#2 – Locate the obstacles

#3 – Set a deadline

#4 – Get to work
