1 Step to Success

Is there a “secret” to success? A lot of people will tell you there is and they are happy to sell you all kinds of products that will push their idea. I have found that most people have a hard time even defining success. Why is that? It is because success is a very broad term. There aren’t two people in the world that have the exact same definition of success. For one person it is monetary, for another it is social, and for many others it revolves around a career. Our personal definition of success is a blend of results in many different areas important to us individually.

So is there a formula for achieving success that works for everyone? Yes there is! It is a universal formula that works no matter how you define success. Simply put, the formula is as follows:

(0+1) x infinity = success

I’ll explain the meaning of the formula a little later but let me illustrate the idea behind it. In his book “212 Degrees”, Mac Anderson talks about the difference between the champion and the runner up coming down to 1/10th of a second, or one extra point, or just one more step. Even though there may be a microscopic difference between the two, the prize for first place is usually 10 times that of second place. Does it mean that the runner, or horse, or car that won was vastly better than the second place contestant? Nope. Just barely better.

Success is in the tiny extra effort.

When people ask me what they can do to be successful, I always tell them, “Just one thing.” Their next question is obviously, “What is the one thing?” At which point I answer, “Anything.” Most people get confused at this answer so I explain further. To be successful there isn’t some enormous task you start or some program to buy that you need to instantly be successful. You just need to do something, one little step in the right direction, every day.

The difference between successful people and those who are struggling is that they are finding ways to learn or improve just a little bit every day. It is nothing huge or even noticeable but over time it begins to add up and turn into something extraordinary.

Referring back to the title of the book I mentioned earlier, at 211 degrees water is hot. But at 212 degrees water boils and produces steam. And steam can be used to drive a locomotive or run a factory. The one extra degree seems insignificant but has the potential to do great things. (I’ll add the video to the bottom of this post.)

The formula for success then becomes:

(Where you are now + One step forward) x Every Day = Success

Action Item

Make a goal to do 1 thing every day towards your life goals. It can be in any area of your life: work, relationships, health, etc. Just pick something every day.

I sincerely believe that the purpose of life is to be constantly learning and progressing. Life is wasted if we spend it all in one place without moving forward. If you can do just one thing every day it won’t be long before you realize that you are starting to feel more successful, confident, and happy. Give it a try!

  1. Hi! I’m a new Successify! reader, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be coming back here often! (I have this site pinned on my Tabs) This is a great website!

I just wanted to add something to this article, as I take this blog as a community of people helping each other reach their respective goals and aspirations in life. This line has had a huge impact on my life:

Success is in the tiny extra effort.

as I used to (and still do sometimes, when I lose control of myself) think that one big push will eventually lead me to success in whichever goal I have at the moment. This of course is very unhealthy thinking, and has led me to a number of low points in my life.

My mother told me about a book called The Slight Edge, written by Jeff Olson, which basically explains the importance, basic principles, and truth behind this short sentence; this book has been getting me through life’s challenges… one step at a time.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to turn their life around! I personally haven’t gotten there yet, but I’m working on it… one step at a time. 🙂
